Are you looking to print from a Macbook, iMac, or traditional Mac computer? Apple devices pair with most devices, but that doesn’t mean shopping for a Mac-compatible printer is easy. A printer needs to meet all of your basic printing expectations.
Moreover, you must check that your printer is compatible with your Mac computer’s current operating system. You may also want to keep in mind that most people are ditching old-school wire computers for easy-to-pair wireless alternatives.
How to Choose the Best Wireless Printer for Mac
Most modern printers are compatible with Apple computers. That means that there is a lot of competition. Here are a few particular criteria you should be looking at when searching for your next Mac-compatible printer.
Printing Speed
Several factors contribute to a printer’s speed. If you’re someone who finds themselves printing off dozens or even hundreds of sheets per day, then be sure to check a printer’s paper tray capacity as well as its PPM (page per minute) rate. Keep in mind that ppm rates tend to be slightly longer for color prints.
Resolution
Resolution plays a role in the quality of the images and writing rendered. A modern printer should be capable of printing off several dots of black or colored ink per inch of paper. Most printer manufacturers provide a printer’s average and optimized DPI ratings. Keep in mind that resolution rates may vary when printing, faxing, scanning, etc.
Capacity
A printer may boast one or more paper trays. Consider the printer’s paper sheet capacity as well as its limitations. Can you easily print on papers of varying sizes and textures? Is there an option to insert stickers, envelopes, card stock, or photo paper?
Connectivity
There tend to be quite a few options for connecting a printer to a Mac computer. Users may be looking to use their printers purely wireless, such as through Wi-Fi, ApplePrint, or a printer-specific smartphone app.
Most wireless printers come with in-depth security and protections. Therefore, users can print, scan, copy, and even fax confidential documents without entertaining any privacy concerns.
Of course, most printers can also come with optional hardwire ports. These connections often come in handy during periods of limited internet connectivity. Many people find it easier to plug their printer right into the source of their documents.
SD and memory card ports are alternative means of connectivity. However, it seems as though most people prefer the option to connect their printer to their computer without the need for wires or external programs. Of course, one-button wireless setups make life all the easier.
Functions
Many people do not see printers as single-task appliances. Modern printers are capable of printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. If you’re going to run a successful home office, you’re going to need every one of these services at your fingertips. Why clutter your personal space with multiple appliances when you could easily opt for a printer that does it all? Keep an eye out for so-called all-in-one printers.
Customer Support
A new printer may be a bit of a learning curve for some people. For this reason, you should always expect the manufacturer to offer its customers some form of ongoing tech support. Many manufacturers have dedicated customer helplines and online chat rooms. These outlets enable confused consumers to receive rapid and meaningful assistance.
Most trusted printers also boast extended warranties. Keep in mind that typical electronic guarantees only last for one year.
Operating System Compatibility
Make sure that your printer is compatible with your Mac’s current operating system. Newer prints may not pair well with antiquated operating systems.
Aesthetics
If you’re someone who spends a lot of time mulling over the look and feel of your office, then aesthetics may also play a part in your decision-making process. Keep in mind that most Mac computers are white or silver. As such, white and silver printers naturally take precedent over gray and black alternatives. Of course, the size and exterior details of a printer may also influence your final decision.
Photo vs. Document Printers
There’s a big difference in the quality of photographs and black and white flyers. At least, there should be. If you’re looking for a printer to help you unload some of your precious snapshots, then a photo printer is most likely what you need. These devices create professional-grade prints. They are typically smaller in stature. Or else, they boast paper trays that are perfect for 4-by-6 photo sheets. Photo printers also tend to have slower ppm rates. Moreover, they usually boast unique ink requirements.

For HP 9015 I deliberately chose a ‘small office printer’, because my experiences with the home garden and kitchen printer are not good. This printer is worth every USD. Installation is a piece of cake and you only need 10 minutes at the most.
The use of the printer is really great. You can print and scan from your smartphone with the HP app. So you don’t need a laptop at all, as long as the printer and smartphone are connected to the same WIFI network. Ink quality is good (HP ink).
Recently printed a 12-count document, it took the printer about 20 seconds, so I think it’s fast enough. If you are looking for a good printer for not a lot of money, then this is the right choice!
I chose the HP Officejet 9015 printer mainly because the Document feeder can scan double-sided fully automatically and quickly.
I expect to enjoy this scanner/printer/copy for a long time and take the bit of noise (kind of moaning +/- 20 seconds after the printer ). I don’t use the built-in fax function because companies hardly use fax anymore these days.
In the end, it was time for a new printer for me and in terms of specs, Epson XP-6100 was much better than others. I haven’t been able to do much with this printer yet, besides testing normal text documents. I still have some old photo paper that this printer apparently has problems with. It doesn’t take the photo paper all at once, but that could be because the paper is a bit older. Even when printing normal documents, it takes a while before it connects and starts printing, but it can’t complain. Installation was also easy and I’m glad I can miss a cable with the Wi-Fi connection.
Recently I purchased the HP ENVY 7830 printer (close to HP ENVY 7155) in the UK and I’d like to share my experience.

The printer is well packaged, the box is quite large, but because of this, there is sufficient protection around it so that the printer can take a beating.
The content of the box is limited, but everything you need is there:
– The printer
– 2 ink refills (Black and color)
– 2 power cables (EU and UK)
– The manual and other documentation and a quick start guide

Design:
The design of the printer has been considered. There is room for all options, but it remains relatively compact. On the left is a place where you can insert a USB or SD card. This is nicely finished with a flap that you can turn or open in front of it. The paper tray is completely closed and is located under the paper outlet. This makes it look like one block where the papers come out of the printer. You can easily pull the paper tray underneath, and you can also remove the block from the paper outlet. This makes it easy to get to the paper. This paper tray consists of 2 parts. A large compartment for A4 printing paper and a small compartment for photo paper. Unfortunately, there is no separate input tray if you want to print a document on sturdier or special paper.
Installation:
To install this printer you really don’t need to have studied. This is almost plugged and play. If you want to install it just follow the quick steps guide. You remove the packaging material (sometimes it’s a good idea to check if you have all the stickers and cardboard) and follow the steps on the screen. At some point, the printer asks you to go to a specific HP site for your PC, or download a specific app for IOs or android. If you have this software, you can continue with the printer’s steps there. The app first connects directly to the printer for further setup.
With me, the installation took 5 minutes, and then it was ready to use. I first did it on the PC, after that, I also put the app on my mobile phone. Very handy to send photos directly to the printer from the phone.
Printing:
As mentioned before, the ink consists of two cartridges, one colored and one black. Many printers have separate colors. If you print a lot of one specific color, you will end up with something a bit more expensive. But you can compensate for this by using the ‘instant ink’ subscription. I will come back to that below. The quality of the prints is very nice. I’m not a specialist, but if I keep them next to a printed photograph of a photographer, I don’t see any difference. This was the same photo twice, so a good comparison. Printing is fast. According to the specifications 15ppm black and 10pppm color. So the speed is high enough. You notice this too, once the first page has been printed the rest goes quickly. When you fill the paper trays, the printer detects the size itself. This is especially handy with photo paper. It is a bit of discovering how to lay the paper correctly so that it is correctly detected. Especially with photo paper this sometimes goes wrong. Once you have figured out how to do it all works smoothly.
Scanning:
I haven’t used scanning much myself at the moment, but I consciously chose this printer because it has a feed-through tray. The advantage of this is that you don’t have to scan every sheet separately, but simply place it on the transit tray and it will scan them one by one. In this way, you can quickly scan and store all important documents. There are even options to mail them through or store them directly in the cloud.
Direct Ink:
As indicated earlier, I was talking about ‘Direct Ink’. This is a service that HP offers to never run out of ink. If your printer is compatible with this service, you can subscribe to it on their website here. This means that you pay a monthly fee for your subscription. This depends on how many pages you plan to print. Your printer keeps track of how much ink is left in the cartridges, and if necessary sends a signal via the Internet that ink should be delivered. They actually make sure that you always have spare time so that you never run out of ink.
As it is always possible that you print a little less or just more, it is possible to take some of the unprinted pages with you to the next month. For example, if you have 100 pages per month in your subscription, and you only print 50, you will have 150 pages the following month. Of course, this is limited and different per subscription. What I find especially useful is that I don’t have to look for the ink when it would run out, but just pay a small amount every month and be sure that I always have ink. The ink is simply delivered to your home and the old cartridge is sent to you for recycling.
Overview:
All in all, I think this is one of the most user-friendly printers I have had so far. You don’t always have to insert paper if you want to print a photo or A4. The installation is very user-friendly. You can make sure that you automatically have ink in the house. There is even an option to set an e-mail address. If you mail there it will be printed automatically. There is also an SD card reader and USB connection available for printing.
From the box it took 5 minutes to get HP 1001nw working. Almost a whole pack of paper in it. Just install the app on your laptop and phone and print it out. In terms of speed, it’s as fast as a serious office printer, quieter in sound. It works fast and well. Yes, it is more expensive to buy than an inkjet, but apart from the above advantages, a 2,500-page toner is just as expensive as 200-page ink from an inkjet. So cheaper in the long run.
The only reason why possibilities are a little less is because it can’t handle colour, but you know that when you buy it.
HP 9015 – fine printer that is suitable for a home office. the quality of the printing supplied is quite ok. On top of that, of course, HP gives you the option of having your printer order ink online (via subscription) when it detects that your ink levels are low, so you don’t have to worry about running out of ink, and HP sends you new cartridges immediately.
Looking for a printer to use with your Macbook or iPhone? In that case I strongly advise against the Epson 6100 printer. Epson has still not made drivers and software available for Mac OS Catalina, even though this operating system has been out for a few months anyway. The installation was therefore virtually impossible. Airprint is also not supported.
I swapped the printer for an HP Envy 5010. A relief compared to this Epson.
Installation of HP 1001nw was as you’d expect from a modern printer, just power in it, and let windows search for printer and ready.
Filling paper a bit clumsy because there is no paper tray, just a place to put it.
What I particularly miss is double-sided printing. Manual double-sided printing is unclear. You have to put the paper manually back in the paper tray and then press the green “continue” button. This was not clear from the on screen instructions.
Because the paper tray has 2 colours, I always try to “open” it, only you have to slide it off. Not really intuitive.
The toner light is unnecessary, I would have preferred a paper light or a transparent paper tray.
The unilluminated black and white display is really no longer possible in 2020, even in an office setting this is insufficient. I haven’t tried it yet, but I can’t imagine how, for example, I would have to “scan” without the display.
The toner refill port looks very “manual”, I would have preferred a flap that folds away automatically when you use it, instead of a rubber that you have to turn manually.
To get to the port you have to lift the flap up 90 degrees, which is very heavy, and when you close it it falls so hard that the glass of the scanner almost breaks. This could have been done with a soft close.
The device also makes a lot of noise unnecessarily. Laser printers are often a bit louder than ink jets, but my 10-year-old laser printer is just as fast and quieter than this one.
The fun gimmick of this printer is of course to refill the toner. Unfortunately I have not been able to test this. However, I do not expect this to be the decisive feature for a consumer or company given the price of the refill toner.
HP ENVY Photo 7155 All-in-One ordered for a family member. Without assistance, logging in to the HP website allowed the software to be installed on an Apple Macbook with High Sierra. Wireless printing, scanning, etc. The advantage would be that the printer head is in the cartridges so that there would no longer be any problems with clogged printer heads when changing cartridges. Practical experience will have to prove this.
The Epson 6100 is a very good printer, with good ease of use. The printer can be installed on the network without too many problems. One consideration is that assigning an ip address is done automatically via DCHP. The print-driver is very easy to install via epson.com. One drawback is that you have to install a whole range of software packages if you want to use the full functionality of the printer. All in all a good printer that can do all basic things well to very well. Unfortunately some more advanced parts are hidden in different software packages.
I have been using the HP 9015 printer for a number of days now, and I am enormously satisfied with it. The installation was done in 10 minutes on the PC and 2 mobile devices, also transferring my current instant ink account to the new printer was easy.
The print quality is top both for normal documents and photos (when printing photos it makes a bit more noise I have the impression). For me one of the most important things about this printer is that I can print from USB but I can also scan all my documents to a USB stick.
I haven’t tested the fax function and all the web functions yet, but the basis is already very good, so the extensive functions will be fine.
At HP 9015 it is very easy to set up to scan to mail/network folder. It can also scan OCR with cloud account (HP smart). Convenient double-sided automatic document feeder. Quick to set up, also mobile (HP smart App). Works well with Windows and Linux.
If you don’t have cloud accounts, this might be a printer for you. There are many ways to print/scan with the device without cloud configuration:
– IPPS print scanning (CUPS compliant)
– LPR Printing
– Connect via Wifi and wired as a network printer
– Has USB connection
– Has built-in FAX
– Printing via WiFi direct
– Printing via Bluetooth low energy
– I am sure I am forgetting one option.
Installation really went like clockwork. The cartridges were very easy to install. If you want real convenience, you can sign up for HP Instant Ink and new cartridges will be sent to you automatically (I didn’t do that, by the way).
Furthermore, the device can be switched off at night (automatically) or put into silent mode.
You can back up the configuration so you don’t have to reset everything when you repair or replace it. You can manage the printer via a secure page. You can also enable remote scanning via this access.
In short, this multifunctional has everything you may expect from a professional printer/scanner.
HP 9015 is a good printer certainly considering the price. Everything you would want when you work from home. But this is also a good all-in-one printer for the ordinary consumer.
Printer starts up a bit slow and is not completely silent. Printer, however, is fast and produces a normal sound.
